Warrior Tyres

Warrior is the passenger car, SUV and light truck tyre brand of Shanghai Huayi Group, whose truck tyres are sold as Double Coin. The tyres are built by Double Coin (Anhui) Warrior Tire Co. in Wuwei County, Anhui, a plant that started production in March 2012. About Warrior

The Warrior name has been used on car tyres in Shanghai for decades. Shanghai Tyre and Rubber, the predecessor of Double Coin, put the brand into a joint venture called Shanghai Michelin Warrior Tire, in which it kept 30 per cent. Tyrepress reported in 2007 that this Michelin-run plant could make about 5 million Warrior car tyres a year. Double Coin sold its 30 per cent to Michelin in early 2010 and the partnership ended.

A second venture followed. In April 2011 Michelin, Double Coin Holdings and Shanghai Huayi signed a memorandum for a new Warrior factory in Wuwei County, about 400 km west of Shanghai, with Michelin holding 40 per cent and the Chinese partners 60 per cent. The plant cost close to 500 million US dollars and was planned for 15 million tyres a year. Production began in March 2012 and the new Warrior range was launched in China on 28 August 2012.

On 20 November 2017 Michelin sold its 40 per cent: 30 per cent went to Huayi Group (Hong Kong) and 10 per cent to Double Coin Tire Group. Warrior has been wholly inside the Huayi group since then. In May 2024 Tyrepress reported the Anhui factory at 5 to 6 million tyres a year, with a second phase adding 3.6 million semi-steel radial tyres.

Certifications and Markets

Warrior tyres have been sold in the United States with UTQG grades, which requires DOT compliance. After the 2014 upgrade the R29 carried a 500 treadwear grade and the R30 a 540 grade, both with A traction. The SR1 was offered with a 65,000 mile treadwear warranty.

China is the main market. When the Wuwei plant opened, about 20 per cent of output was earmarked for export. In North America the brand was sold from 2001 to 2009 under the first Michelin venture and was relaunched at the 2013 SEMA Show by China Manufacturers Alliance, Double Coin’s US sales arm. Warrior patterns are also listed by tyre retailers in New Zealand. In 2012 Double Coin said it was in talks with Shanghai Volkswagen and Shanghai General Motors about original equipment supply.

Sourcing Warrior from China

All Warrior passenger and light truck tyres come from the single Wuwei plant in Anhui. Double Coin truck tyres are made at separate group factories in Jiangsu, Chongqing, Xinjiang and Thailand, so the two brands do not ship from one site.
